Ken Harvey, long-time YMCA stalwart and City of Sydney Basketball Association (CSBA) Life Member, generously bequeathed part of his estate to support club-level basketball within the CSBA. The KHY Basketball Club was formed in 2020, amalgamating junior teams playing as the Eastern Suburbs Astronauts and senior YMCA teams. The Astronauts were a junior club initially formed and administered by CSBA. The origin of the name dates back to the first season of the NBL in 1979, when the CSBA fielded a team named the City of Sydney Astronauts. That team had developed from the Sydney YMCA teams that had previously played in the Australian Club Championships that predated the NBL. The links between the YMCA and Astronauts are strong, making the formation of the KHY Basketball Club incorporating both groups a natural choice.
As mentioned, Ken Harvey was a Life Member of the CSBA, but this does not do full justice to his other achievements and accolades. Quoting from his obituary that appeared on the CSBA Facebook page: “We rightly laud the elite athletes and referees who participate at the top level of competition in basketball and recognize the efforts of administrators who guide the development of the sport. But for all those who have reached the highest levels, there are many more volunteers and tireless workers who are the foundation of a successful sport. They coach the kids who just want to play, organize teams, wash the uniforms, referee and do the score bench. They are there to do what is necessary. Ken Harvey was such a person and what made him so unique was that his efforts were maintained for over 70 years.”
Ken Harvey was inducted into the Basketball NSW Hall of Fame in 2013, see his citation. For a more personal perspective see Legend in the City.
The primary objectives of the KHY Basketball Club are to promote and foster the life and legacy of Ken Harvey by encouraging participation in the sport of basketball by players and supporters of all ages, all skill levels, and all social, religious and cultural backgrounds, in a friendly, safe, and mutually respectful manner and spirit.

All senior teams are now in their new uniforms with the Div 1 men restarting with a win.
The senior uniforms have now arrived just in time for the long awaited resumption of competitions after lockdown. Looking good guys.
It was a round 4 sweep for the KHY Astronauts with all teams, boys and girls coming away with wins. The clean sweep was completed by a big 92-29 win by the 16 boys pictured here with a happy coach. Other results were wins to the 10 boys 27-21, 12 boys Div 1 39-26, 12 boys Div 2 35-29, 14 boys Div 2 52-33 and 14 boys Div 3 35-15. Well done to all players, coaches, managers and cheering spectators.
Round 4 proved a winning weekend for the KHY Astronauts. The day got off to a thrilling start with the under 10 girls winning 10-9 with a made free throw after the buzzer. The under 12 girls, pictured here, seemed pleased by their 42-14 win while the 14 girls got their first win of the season 42-12.
Junior uniforms are here and they look great.
The skills challenges led to some healthy rivalry between the juniors as they showcased their shooting and dribbling skills.
Our first Gala Day was a huge success. As someone commented "Ken would have been very happy".
There was a great atmosphere with lots of willing workers contributing to the success.
There was plenty of action on the court at the KHY Gala Day. Good luck to all the KHY teams as the 2021 competition gets underway.
